Team member spotlight: Kevin Coyne

Today we want to introduce Kevin Coyne, a Tax and Accounting Specialist, that has joined our team. Kevin is an Enrolled Agent and will be helping our clients with accounting and taxes.

Why did you decide to become an accountant?

I like the diversity of the clients I get to work with, getting to see a cross section of different industries and clients.

When were you hired for TL;DR?

Mid coronavirus pandemic, 2020.

What made you decide to want to work for TL;DR?

I wanted to join a team that was dedicated to doing right by their clients, and to continuous self improvement. I definitely found that here!

What do you enjoy most about TL;DR?

Having a group of like-minded experts at my fingertips.

What is a typical work day like for you?

I like to put on some music and settle in with some tea as I coordinate my day in the morning. I try to get the most challenging things out of the way early. I take my time when I’m up for my lunch to cook and really make sure I’m coming back fresh afterwards. The rest of the day usually goes pretty quick!

What is your favorite tip for small business owners?

I know it’s not glamorous, but always have liability insurance!

How do you stay informed about developments and changes in the accounting world?

I’m part of a few groups that discuss tax news as it happens, and there’s always more to learn if you can figure out the right search term!

What is your biggest achievement to date – personal or professional?

Probably becoming a homeowner. I love keeping a garden, and making the place my own.

What do you do outside of work?

I play an awful lot of board games, and I try to keep up on new ones as they get designed and published. So many interesting game designs have come out in the last few years!

If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose?

Captain Jean-Luc Picard,Star Trek: The Next Generation

Do you have any advice for those interested in entering the accounting field?

Talk to your classmates, professors, coworkers, and other accountants you know to get a feel for what different kinds of accounting jobs are like. At some point it will behoove you to specialize, and you’ll have done yourself a favor by gathering knowledge and insights early on.

Are there any other random facts you’d like to share?

I’ve always wanted to own a Cappybara – the world’s largest species of rodent, and the absolute chillest animal I have ever encountered

We welcome Kevin to the TL;DR: Accounting team!
